Nigel Jones is a restaurant entrepreneur committed to sharing the rich foods of his native Jamaica while creating sustainable opportunities for people of color. He is the visionary,
chef, co-owner, and general manager behind Oakland’s beloved Kingston 11, a thriving Jamaican restaurant he opened in 2013.
He learned from his grandmother how to cook in the traditional Jamaican style. Migrating to the Bronx, New York to be with his mother as a teenager he learned how to host great parties and make everyone feel at home. He never strayed far from these roots and after 25 years in the fashion industry, he decided to pursue his lifelong dream of bringing the Jamaican style of cooking and hospitality to the Bay Area.
Nigel launched Kingston 11 as a pop-up restaurant in Berkeley’s “Gourmet Ghetto” in 2010. It quickly became known among locals for the destination for Caribbean food and irie vibes. So popular was the pop-up, Nigel and his partner Adrian Henderson opened a
more permanent location in Uptown Oakland just three years later. Nigel has grown the restaurant to become a destination for Oaklanders who value community and rich Jamaican flavors. With every endeavor, Nigel seeks to create opportunities for people of
color often left behind by economic development, showcase the talents of our community, and provide people healthy, organic foods cooked in a nourishing home-style way.
Daniel Patterson is the Oakland-based chef, author and restaurateur behind Coi, Alta and several other Bay Area restaurants. He is also the co-founder of the “revolutionary” fast food venture LocoL. In late Spring of 2017, he opened the second location of Alta at the Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood, joining his three Alta Group restaurants: Alfred’s Steakhouse (which he took ownership of in 2015), the original Alta in Mid-Market and Plum Bar in Oakland. Alta Group and Daniel Patterson have also partnered with YOTEL for the food & beverage properties at the forthcoming hotel in the historic Grant Building on Market Street.
In addition to his Alta Group restaurants, Patterson owns the two Michelin-starred Coi and Aster in San Francisco. He partnered with Roy Choi to create LocoL, the revolutionary fast food chain with locations in Watts and West Oakland, CA which was recently named the first-ever restaurant of the year by LA Times restaurant critic Jonathan Gold.
Patterson is also the co-founder of The Cooking Project, a non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to teaching kids and young adults fundamental cooking skills and is working with ROC (Restaurant Opportunities Center) United’s social equality pilot program to combat occupational segregation in the restaurant space.
Patterson has been named Food & Wine’s Best New Chef and has received a James Beard Award for Best Chef in the West. He is the author of Coi: Stories and Recipes and Aroma, The Magic of Essential Oils in Foods and Fragrance with Mandy Aftel. His second book with Aftel, The Art of Flavor, was released by Riverhead on August 1, 2017. His essays have appeared in The New York Times, Food & Wine, Financial Times and Lucky Peach. He lives in Oakland, California.
